Welcome to The Varsity Shop, a bastion of tradition rooted in the heart of Oxford since 1846. Our journey began as Castell & Son (Oxford) Limited on St Giles, and over the decades, we’ve become synonymous with Oxford’s rich heritage.

In the 1850s, Castells introduced the distinguished Oxford College Colours, paving the way for sartorial excellence. In 1870, we marked another milestone with the creation of the modern necktie, a timeless accessory that endures. Our legacy extends to the iconic Oxford University crested tie, a symbol of academic pride.

Today, nestled on the iconic High Street, The Varsity Shop stands as a haven for Oxford and College apparel and accessories. Catering to students, graduates, and visitors, our family-owned business is committed to providing an elevated shopping experience. With a wealth of knowledge and a dedication to customer service, we ensure each visitor receives personalised attention.

Step into our world Monday to Sunday, at 113 High Street, Oxford. Experience the fusion of history and contemporary fashion, where every garment and accessory carries the essence of Oxford’s esteemed legacy.

Join us on this journey, where tradition meets sophistication, and let The Varsity Shop be your gateway to Oxford’s enduring charm.

Our Ethical Trading Policy

We have 2 over riding priorities on ethical trade – the welfare of workers in our supply chain and ensuring a sustainable environment impact.  The Shepherd & Woodward Group use the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) base code as its standard for all primary suppliers across all its business.

The code states:

1. Employment is freely chosen
2. Freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining are respected
3. Working conditions are safe and hygienic
4. Child labour shall not be used
5. Living wages are paid
6. Working hours are not excessive
7. No discrimination is practised
8. Regular employment is provided
9. No harsh or inhumane treatment is allowed

Fur Policy

At The Varsity Shop (Part of the Shepherd & Woodward Group) we only use artificial fur.

Many of the hoods that we keep in stock include a white fur trim which traditionally was made using the skins of rabbits.

We strongly believe that the breeding of animals for their skins is not justified so we use high quality alternatives instead.
